When it comes to understanding the benefits to a plant of a mineral fertilizer such as Polyhalite, there is nothing quite like seeing it with your own eyes. In a recent experiment in Brazil, 5 different fertilizer treatments were applied to maize plants. The treatments were chosen to demonstrate the effect of Polysulphate on the plants.
What is Polyhalite
Polyhalite, marketed as Polysulphate, is a new organic multi-fertilizer containing four key plant nutrients: sulphur, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Polyhaliteis a soluble, easily absorbed, cost effective answer to crop nutrition. Innovative and highly versatile, this natural, multi-nutrient mineral is low in chloride and crop safe, suitable for use alone or in blends and compound fertilizers.
The different fertilizer treatments
There are 5 different treatments that applied to the plants are:
- Treatment 1 – No fertilization
- Treatment 2 – Granular Polysulphate
- Treatment 3 – Standard Polysulphate
- Treatment 4 – Solution (lack of K, Mg, Ca and S)
- Treatment 5 – Solution + Calcium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, and potash sulphate
The photographs were taken when the plants are 15 days old and the differences between a plant with no fertilization and one with Polysulphate are dramatic.
The maize plant grown with Standard Polysulphate is taller, bigger and has healthier looking leaves than those in each of the other treatments.
So what is it that makes Polyhalite so good for the plants? The combination of sulphate, potassium, magnesium, and calcium in Polyhalite (Polysulphate) mined in the UK, provides key nutrients to the plants. More details can be found on the Introducing Polysulphate page of this website.
